Description

Shaggy is a reasonably tall, thin young man with thick, unkempt light brown or dirty blond hair. He typically wears an olive-green T-shirt, baggy gray or mauve pants, and stylish sunglasses (even indoors). His earrings appear to have a long animal canine dangling from each. He has a long neck with a prominent Adam's apple, and his mouth is perpetually twisted to one side as if considering something or expressing mild disdain or disapproval. In fifth-season episodes, his T-shirt is orange in color.

Notes

Shaggy is something of a legend among the minor characters at Lawndale High. Thanks to animator errors, he appears to be able to time travel, appear in two places at the same time, change his height, and change his shape into other students. He also appears to be the only character on the show who is derived from another cartoon character. There has been a constant suspicion among Daria fans that Shaggy's appearance was in large part based on Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. No official comment has been made about this connection, but the striking similarities between the two do provoke questions. (See image #2 below.)

In the now-missing flipbook called "Oh, the Obscurity!" from MTV's Daria website (c. 2001), we learn the following: BOY TEEN 8—The Daria artists like this mellow dude so much that he acquired the nickname "Shaggy." At Brittany's party in "The Invitation," he pops up in two places at once, defying physics. (First appeared in "Esteemsters")

Oddly, Shaggy is never shown carrying a backpack or books in the series. Did he not care? Did he memorize all his work? Did he stick the schoolwork in his pockets?

The nickname "Beatnik Shaggy" is also used by a Daria fan artist, which is probably the origin for the name's use in one story.

Fanfiction Appearances

The DariaWiki character page for Shaggy names a number of fanfics in which this character appears. A few stories attempt to explain how he is able to accomplish some of his preternatural deeds, but many just ignore them.

Image Gallery Notes

1. MTV line drawing of Boy Teen 8, informally known as Shaggy. Image was probably from the now-missing flipbook "Oh, the Obscurity!"

2. Color image of Hanna-Barbera character Shaggy Rogers, from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Note general similarities in dress (olive-drab T-shirt, mauve-gray pants), coloration (dark blond or light brown hair, pale skin), and appearance (unkempt hair, thin build, small goatee, long neck) to Daria's Shaggy. See also #25.

3. Shaggy first appears in the small cluster of students entering Lawndale High after the start of the school year, in "Esteemsters." Daria and Quinn are in the front of the group facing Ms. Li. Shaggy is hidden behind Daria in the front views of the same group. Like Daria, Shaggy is sent to Mr. O'Neill's after-school self-esteem classes, though we do not know why Mrs. Manson, the school psychologist, sent him there. He remained in the class with the other students after Daria and Jane managed to get out early.

4. Standard seating arrangement of Mr. O'Neill's classes, seasons 1-4. Shaggy is on the left side, sitting in front of Les and behind Jessica. However, as shown elsewhere, this seating arrangement is subject to change.

5. A different seating arrangement for O'Neill's class in "Monster." Someone (it appears to be Kelly) is now between Shaggy and Les. It is also possible that the artist increased the space between Shaggy and Les, allowing Kelly (in the row beyond) to seem to be between them.

6. A different view from the back of Mr. O'Neill's classroom, one row to the left of the view in #4. Part of Shaggy's left arm and leg can be seen at the bottom right corner of the picture. Compare with #4, noting how Mr. O'Neill's desk is centered in both views, meaning the rows must have been moved to one side (which, given the room's size, would be very hard to do). Also note the different type of "blackboard" behind Mr. O'Neill and other changes.

7. Seating arrangement of the right side of Mr. DeMartino's classroom in "Pinch Sitter" (second season). Shaggy is in the front right corner, from the teacher's point of view; Andrea is across the aisle from Shaggy, on his right. However....

8. ...moments before the class leaves the room, Shaggy mysteriously turns into Angel! How did that happen? Is Shaggy or Angel a shape-changer? Is someone casting an illusion-type spell? Did reality shift?

9. "Esteemsters": Mr. DeMartino's history class, seen from the back of the room. Shaggy is the student in the upper left corner, nearest the door.

10. "The New Kid" reveals that Shaggy is on the staff of the Lawndale High yearbook. What skills he possesses for yearbook production are unknown.

11. In "Cafe Disaffecto," while Lawndale High students perform for their classmates, Shaggy sits in the back of the cafe with Burnout Girl and White Sweater. Per #4 above, Shaggy sits immediately across the aisle to the left of Burnout Girl in DeMartino's class, so the two obviously know each other.

12. Shaggy walks up behind Upchuck in "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" to watch Kevin Thompson's ill-fated stunt on his motorbike.

13. Shaggy sits next to Angel during the assembly at the end of "Esteemsters." Is there a connection between the two of them sitting together and the weird switcheroo in #7 and #8? Where are Scully and Mulder when you need them?

14. Shaggy and Angel together again in the auditorium (unknown episode).

15. And again, Angel and Shaggy (unknown episode). What is going on with those two?

16. In "Jake of Hearts," Shaggy (far left) hangs out at the DJs' small stage in the school parking lot to listen to music and hear the DJs do their thing.

17. Shaggy has been an observant bystander during a number of unusual events in the TV series. (See #12.) Here, he reacts to Daria's announcement of her father's heart attack in "Jake of Hearts."

18. The infamous Time Travelers scene from "The Misery Chick": In a flashback during Jane Lane's story about Tommy Sherman, Shaggy and several other students (all from Daria's classes) are seen sitting in the stands watching a football game—three years before Daria arrives at LHS. They look exactly as they do when Daria sees them later. The blonde girl in the foreground is unique and not one of the "time travelers." She is waving at Tommy Sherman, who is so distracted by her that moments later he runs into a goalpost while making a touchdown.

19. By chance, Shaggy and Dawn (among others) are eyewitnesses when Daria blurts out that she has kissed Jane's boyfriend in "Dye! Dye! My Darling."

20. In "Daria Dance Party," a shocked-looking, suit-wearing Shaggy watches a fight break out among Quinn's admirers, then leaves moments later to watch the fight between Kevin and Robert. This is the same suit Shaggy wears in "Just Add Water" (#21).

21. Once again present during a significant Daria event, Shaggy wears a suit jacket, dark pants, and tie (hair still uncombed) during the cruise on the Princess Fairy in "Just Add Water." Corey is beside him on the left. His suit was probably ruined when the ship went down.

22. Quinn Morgendorffer is known to be very particular about who is allowed to sit at lunch tables with her ("The New Kid"), but in this scene from "Groped by an Angel" Shaggy joins the Three Js in listening to Quinn's account of her guardian angel's deeds. Why did Quinn let him in so close?

23. One of the hopefuls who tried out for the track team in "See Jane Run" turns out to be none other than Shaggy, suited up and sitting in the stands while the female runners warm up.

24. Shaggy, just as alone as he was during Brittany's party in "The Invitation" (see #29), stands around with a drink in his hand during another of Brittany's parties in "Groped by an Angel." He does not, however, try any paranormal tricks this time.

25. A different right-side seating arrangement is shown in Mr. DeMartino's class in "Lucky Strike." Shaggy now wears an orange T-shirt. He, like everyone else in the class, winces as a substitute teacher makes chalk squeak on a chalkboard. Curiously, Shaggy Rogers of Scooby-Doo also briefly switched from wearing a green tee to an orange or red one in some episodes. (See "Character" under the Wikipedia entry for Shaggy Rogers.)

26. Here's the same episode, "Lucky Strike," but by the episode's end Kevin and Andrea have switched places in one row, and Brittany and Shaggy have switched in their row, too. Why?

27. Shaggy carries a lunch tray past Jodie and Mack in these two sequential images, again wearing a bright orange T-shirt (Is It College Yet?). It appears that Shaggy wears an orange tee all through the fifth season to the show's end.

28. In the musical intro to Is It Fall Yet? we see Shaggy dancing on the beach with everyone else. These images show him wearing a wifebeater T-shirt, boonie hat (soft military hat, Vietnam era to present day), and knee-length baggy shorts. The latter two items have some kind of grayish camouflage pattern, perhaps desert or urban style. (Was a relative or friend of his in the first Persian Gulf War?) He can dance, clumsily if enthusiastically.

29. The Great Party Caper: We see Shaggy at Brittany's party in "The Invitation," and the first question that comes to mind is: how did he get invited? Brittany wasn't trying to invite unpopular people. Maybe he's more popular than we think (see #22). Note his height relative to other characters around him, and in other images in this section.

30. Next, we see Shaggy standing perhaps two feet behind Popular Girl, Sandi, and Tiffany. Look at how much shorter he's abruptly gotten. He must have lost almost a foot in height.

31. Continuing the events in "The Invitation," we find Shaggy sitting on a sofa, again behind the popular trio from #30. Haven't they noticed him around them all the time? Shaggy appears to have horns and a big ear, but that is part of a stuffed animal head behind him on the wall. (Or is it? Looks satanic. Heh heh heh heh.) Popular Girl is pointing out various students and holding court on their popularity. We cut away....

32. ...and immediately see Shaggy standing in the foreground, relative to the three girls' view of the front hall of Brittany's house. Shaggy now has a drink in his hand and is looking around. The episode cuts back immediately to a scene almost identical to #22, with Shaggy still sitting on the sofa. WTF??? How could no one notice this?

33. Another example of Shaggy's ability to be in two places at the same time is seen in "This Year's Model." The school auditorium is the setting for the on-stage audition scene toward the end of the episode.

34. This image (when clicked on to make the writing legible) shows the audience in the audition scene, including a front view of a section of the audience. Shaggy is once again in two places at once, and in one place he seems to have changed the color of his hair and shirt, too. On top of that, the Three Js have rearranged their seating order from one moment to the next. What is going on here?

35. Shaggy is present, wearing an orange shirt, on the right of this image from the end of "Prize Fighters." He is watching the hot dog eating contest sponsored at Lawndale High by Jake Morgendorffer with other students, children, and adults. Two characters looking exactly like The Head are present on the left side of the screen. Did Shaggy notice this? Did he have something to do with it?

36. At the "jousting" booth in "Fair Enough," Shaggy lies on the ground holding his head, appearing injured like several other students near him. Did Shaggy try his combat skills against the might of Mr. DeMartino?

37. Shaggy sits next to Stacy Rowe in the school cafeteria in "The Invitation," so he wasn't a pariah to the Fashion Club (see #22).

38. Shaggy walks down the hallway with Burnout Girl in "The F Word." The two had at least one class together through most seasons of the show.

39. Again present during a major event, Shaggy watches as Kevin drops his crutches in "A Tree Grows in Lawndale."

40. Shaggy also watches in Mrs. Bennett's economics class when the Amazon Modeling Agency arrives in "This Year's Model."

41. Though others react with angry looks to Kevin's outburst in the stands during the bridal expo ("I Don't"), Shaggy instead has an open-mouthed look as if surprised or shocked.

42. When Val visits Lawndale High, Shaggy looks on for a moment—then walks away in the alternate image ("The Lost Girls"). He does not participate in School Colors Day, a refusenik like several other students. He carries a book here, which is unusual for him.

43. Shaggy talks with Hot Shades in the background as Val talks to Daria and Jane in the school cafeteria ("The Lost Girls").

44. In "Fat Like Me," we see a curious thing far down the hall, immediately to the left of Sandi, by her shoulder: Shaggy is talking with Tank Top, who leans against the lockers in a relaxed way. Are they enjoying a talk? Is romance in the wind?
