Description

Bob is a muscular teen whose spiky hair is dyed blue-green or green. His hair forms a widow's peak above his forehead. A small ring pierces his right eyebrow, and a chain reaches from a stud in his left nostril to his left earlobe. Tattooed rings of a complicated design encircle his left bicep (and sometimes his right), with what looks like a skull-and-crossbones image above it.

His gray (or purple-mauve) shirt has the sleeves torn off at the shoulders. One or two (silver?) necklaces, several small loop ear piercings, a possible bracelet on his right wrist, and a thick leather band (watchband?) on his left wrist are also worn. One episode shows a ring on the middle finger of his left hand. His (khaki or olive drab) cargo pants have the legs torn off below the knees; large pockets are visible on the sides. High-topped military boots, no socks visible, complete his outfit.

In some depictions Bob's face has a porcine appearance, particularly when his head is drawn more circular than oval.

Notes

Given his piercings, tattoos, stressed (torn up) clothing, smoking, and (underage) drinking in "Jane's Addition" (and the IICY? images), Bob appears to have some bad habits. Nonetheless he is rarely shown to be disruptive and even helps Mr. DeMartino pack classroom materials in Is It Fall Yet? at the end of the school year. He is likely an extrovert, as he is seen in a number of social situations, and he reacts with loud emotion and enthusiasm to public events. However, he is almost never seen with anyone of either sex.

Bob's arm tattoos change from episode to episode, even appearing and disappearing, as a result of animation errors. This might open the temptation to make them supernatural in some way in fanfiction.

With his physique, Bob could be a wrestler, but he would have to remove all his piercings before a match. Weightlifting is surely possible. Does Ms. Li let him get away with his outsider looks because in some manner he brings honor to Lawndale High? And what does he do for the yearbook that allows him to be on the staff?

Image Gallery Notes

1. Bob's first appearance in Daria: sitting silently (and looking rather dull) behind Daria in Mr. DeMartino's history class in "Esteemsters." He doesn't change his appearance throughout the rest of the show (three years Lawndale time), except with minor modifications. When did he start dressing like this? Didn't Lawndale High have a dress code? Note the single dark necklace.

2. View from the back of Mr. DeMartino's classroom ("Esteemsters").

3. View from the front of Mr. DeMartino's classroom ("Esteemsters").

4. Bob sat in the back of Mr. O'Neill's classes, on the left side, in early seasons. This scene is from "The Misery Chick." Bob appears to be asleep.

5. An unexpected rearrangement of students in Mr. DeMartino's class in "Pinch Sitter." Bob now sits behind Angel and in front of Daria. Here he seems to be having an unusually bad "bad hair day."

6. Fifth-season seating arrangement in Mr. O'Neill's class: still sitting behind Daria ("Lucky Strike").

7. "Arts 'N Crass" shows Bob in the far back of Daria and Jane's class with Ms. Defoe.

8. Bob sits next to Jennifer 3 in the auditorium (episode unknown), with empty seats to either side of them. His hair seems to be a fluorescent green here.

9. Bob drives his unknown make of convertible to crash Brittany's party in "The Invitation." The guy shouting out of the car appears to be Red Cap, no doubt a friend of Bob's. Bob, therefore, had his driver's license when he was a sophomore, or else drove without a license. Crashing parties looks like his thing.

10. Bob eats alone in the cafeteria, though near other guys, in this overhead view (episode unknown).

11. "This Year's Model" has Bob witness Brittany's confrontation with Diana and Slutty Girl. He has the bright green hair seen in #8.

12. Bob, Burnout Girl, and Angel talk over lunch in the school cafeteria as Daria, Jane, and Val walk by to sit at the table next to them ("The Lost Girls"). Bob and Burnout Girl, among a handful of others, did not wear Lawndale High colors that day.

13. Drawn to the disk jockeys in the school parking lot, Bob enjoys their music and antics in "Jake of Hearts." Note the tattoos are on both upper arms.

14. In "Jake of Hearts," Bob gives a lusty cheer for the disk jockeys at Lawndale High, even as one of the DJs tries to crowd surf and falls on his face. Bob had a tattoo on his right arm in #13 that is now missing.

15. "Jake of Hearts": Bob is in the crowd that hears Daria's story about her father's heart attack. The local mood is definitely down. Bob will probably remember this later.

16. At the end of "Prize Fighters," we see Bob and Angel standing together in the upper left side of this image, watching the hot dog eating contest being sponsored by Jake Morgendorffer. What is especially interesting is that there are two kids who look exactly like The Head walking up to watch the fun, one coming up from behind Bob and one from the bottom of the screen. Did any of the students notice this, or are they used to it?

17. Why would Bob buy a Fashion Club newsletter on coming fashions in "The Story of D"? Is he subject to the charms of the Fashion Club, too?

18. Jodie talks with Bob, who appears to be on the high-school yearbook staff in "The New Kid."

19. Overhearing Kevin's outburst, Bob looks back in the auditorium during the bridal expo in "I Don't." The people to either side of him are unknown.

20. Among the students helping Mr. DeMartino pack teaching materials in Is It Fall Yet? is Bob, though it is not clear what he is doing.

21. Bob sits with Hot Shades in Pizza King in "The New Kid." Daria and Ted are in the background.

22. "Groped by an Angel": Oblivious to Quinn (off-screen at left) talking about her "guardian angel" in the school cafeteria, Bob eats lunch. Fashion Club members can be seen in the background, glaring at Quinn. Shaggy is hanging on to Quinn's every word.

23. "Daria Dance Party": It appears Bob has a nice black suit for dancing. That's unexpected. Later, he's sitting in the rear of a pickup truck outside the school, drinking something (probably alcoholic) with a friend (Latino Lion?). This is just prior to the big fight.

24. Bob is visible in the stands among other students at a losing football game, to the upper left of Mack ("Fizz Ed"). Bob wears a gray coat or jacket.

25. A series of three shots from the parade scene in "I Loathe a Parade": In the first, Bob is cheering, hands over his head. We hope he uses deodorant.

26. In the second, we get a closer look at Bob. His normally gray torn shirt looks purplish.

27. In the third, it appears that Bob is wearing two necklaces, not one, of a light gray color. Are they silver? These necklaces are sometimes visible, sometimes not, and sometimes dark in color. The freaky-looking girl next to him might be his date, but we'll never know.

28. "The Misery chick":

29. "One J at a Time":

30. "The F Word":

31. "Just Add Water":

32. "Lucky Strike":

33.

34. Just before Quinn accidentally destroys Brittany's gift in "Groped by an Angel," we see Bob talking with Three Buttons and Zack at the Taylors' party.

35. The first of two images of Bob clubbing in "Ill." Notice that his arm tattoos have changed from some earlier views of them. He now seems to have a skull-and-crossbones on his left bicep. He also has a ring on the middle finger of his left hand. It is unclear what he is wearing around his right wrist; the item is not shown at times in other episodes. His necklaces are missing, too. Burnout Girl is in the background in the The Zon.

36. Clubbing in "Ill" again. Scarlett, Trapezoid Glasses, and Josh are in the The Zon, too. Do they come here often? Bob is wandering around alone.

37. Two more images of Bob in the The Zon, this time from "Jane's Addition." At the beginning of the episode, just before Jane meets Tom, we see Bob drinking at the bar...

38. ...and smoking (either marijuana or tobacco). Bob, again, is alone. He is doubtless very familiar with Mystik Spiral and its music, and he looks at ease in the club environment. A better view of Bob and his surroundings lies in the alternate image.

39. In Is It College Yet? Bob is seated in one of the rear rows of the graduating class. Despite his looks and habits, he made it through high school. Note his multiple earrings. This is the last we see of him.

40. The musical intro to Is It College Yet? presented us with two alternate images of Bob. First, we see him at a college keg party in the 1980s with an orange Mohawk.

41. We also see Bob at a college toga party, again by a beer keg, in the 1970s, a la Animal House (Is It College Yet?).

42. In the musical intro to Is It Fall Yet?, Bob is an enthusiastic dancer on the beach, still wearing his torn pants. He also has his necklaces on. He dances alone and does not seem to be aware of anyone else.

43. A curious scene in "Daria!": We see Bob in the top row of the bleachers (sitting next to Quinn and the Fashion Club) as Ms. Li rushes in to give her hurricane warning. However, in a different view of the same scene, the entire top row has vanished! Where are Bob and the Fashion Club?

44. Bob sways and sings a wordless tune in the fantasy episode "Daria!" with a number of other students.
